Laval, CHU de Qu?bec, and pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has discovered a way to stimulate the brain's natural defense mechanisms in people with Alzheimer's disease. This major breakthrough, details of which are presented January 15 in an early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), opens the door to the development of a treatment for Alzheimer's disease and a vaccine to prevent the illness.

One of the main characteristics of Alzheimer's disease is the production in the brain of a toxic molecule known as amyloid beta. Microglial cells, the nervous system's defenders, are unable to eliminate this substance, which forms deposits called senile plaques.

The team led by Dr. Serge Rivest, professor at Universit? Laval's Faculty of Medicine and researcher at the CHU de Qu?bec research center, identified a molecule that stimulates the activity of the brain's immune cells. The molecule, known as MPL (monophosphoryl lipid A), has been used extensively as a vaccine adjuvant by GSK for many years, and its safety is well established.

In mice with Alzheimer's symptoms, weekly injections of MPL over a twelve-week period eliminated up to 80% of senile plaques. In addition, tests measuring the mice's ability to learn new tasks showed significant improvement in cognitive function over the same period.

The researchers see two potential uses for MPL. It could be administered by intramuscular injection to people with Alzheimer's disease to slow the progression of the illness. It could also be incorporated into a vaccine designed to stimulate the production of antibodies against amyloid beta. "The vaccine could be given to people who already have the disease to stimulate their natural immunity," said Serge Rivest. "It could also be administered as a preventive measure to people with risk factors for Alzheimer's disease."

"When our team started working on Alzheimer's disease a decade ago, our goal was to develop better treatment for Alzheimer's patients," explained Professor Rivest. "With the discovery announced today, I think we're close to our objective."

When I teach my students, I look each of them in the eyes during class time. Whether I am presenting to a classroom with 6 or 60 students, they can all see the difference. They can tell that I am not looking at anyone because I am looking over the heads of the audience members.

What should I do instead?

Often, an unprepared speaker will look up when he or she is searching for something to say. Unprepared presenters tend to look away from an audience for a large portion of their speech. Content should be well prepared in advance so that a speaker is focusing on delivery, as opposed to the message, on speech day.

How can you feel comfortable with your content so that you can focus on your audience during your presentation? Preparation and practice will go a long way. Nancy Duarte advises us to spend 36-90 hours preparing for a one-hour presentation. Scott Schwertly advises practicing a speech at least 8 times. If we accept the second eye contact myth, we believe looking down at our notes signals dishonesty or weakness. This is problematic because most of us need our notes to help keep our speech organized and on track. Refusing to look away from the audience can be damaging for the presenter.

What should I do instead?

Looking away from your audience once in a while during a presentation?isn?t?negative. You do not have to look at your audience for 100% of your presentation. Instead of forcing your eyes to remain on your audience, realize that it is okay to look down at your notes. It?s also okay to get a drink of water, to pick up a prop, to fix a technical issue, or to gather your thoughts. The key to strong eye contact is to remember that most of the time, your eyes should be focused on your audience.

?Look at your audience in the eyes. It?s scary. It?s hard. Do it anyway.?

It is true, though, that you do not want to write your entire speech out because you will be tempted to look down and to read from that script when presenting. Reading your speech is terrible. Instead, use an outline. Write only your main points and list them in bullet point fashion. You can also use note cards and write one main point on each card. This technique will help push you to meet the eyes of your audience but will ensure you have your content outlined just in case you need to fall back on it.

Myth #3: Wrong body part

What?s the myth?

If you?re afraid to look at your audience in the eye, look at their foreheads or at the top of their heads. This will help you avoid meeting their eyes, but they will think you?re looking at them.

Why is it wrong?

Imagine a one-on-one conversation with a co-worker. We can see and feel a difference when that person looks us in the eye versus when that person looks away ? at the top of our head, down at our attire, or at our feet. People can tell when you?re looking at them and when you are not.

Looking at different body parts of your audience can be perceived as inappropriate. For example, you wouldn?t want to look at the legs or chest of an audience member. It is also confusing to your audience if you are looking at foreheads, shoulders, hands, or the space between two people.

What should I do instead?

Audiences want to feel a connection with speakers, and the only way to connect with someone is to look that person in the eye.

Eye contact is one of the most important elements of delivery. There is no ?trick? to make this easy. It?s hard, and we?ve got to learn to stomach the butterflies and get over it. Look at your audience in the eyes. It?s scary. It?s hard. Do it anyway.

Instead of buying into myths or gimmicks, we must realize that delivery is difficult and cannot be achieved through shortcuts. We must also understand the basic goal of delivery during a presentation. The heart of delivery is an authentic, natural connection with an audience. If you focus on the hard work that comes with overcoming your public speaking fear and presentation anxiety, and if you put in the hours of necessary preparation and practice time, you will be able to focus on delivery ? and especially on eye contact ? the next time you present.

Yen under pressure, Asian stocks subdued

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The yen plumbed a 2-1/2 year low against the dollar on Monday, grabbing the Asian spotlight amid subdued trading for the region's stock markets, with the focus on Japan's central bank as it faced unrelenting political pressure to deliver bold stimulus.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday said the Bank of Japan (BOJ) must set a 2 percent inflation target and make it a medium-term, not long-term, goal to show markets it was determined to pursue bold monetary easing to end nearly two decades of deflation.

His comments emboldened yen bears, who took a fresh swipe at the currency. That saw the U.S. dollar hit a high of 89.67 yen, a level not seen since mid-2010, while the euro came within a whisker of 120.00 yen, scaling a 20-month peak.

"The confirmation that there's going to be a push for a new (BOJ) governor, that new governor is going to have a mandate of 2 percent inflation, that plus the fiscal stimulus is a major negative for the yen," said Callum Henderson, global head of FX research for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore.

In contrast, equity markets had little news to go on, and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was barely changed, remaining near a 17-month peak set on Friday. Tokyo markets were closed for a public holiday.

Having staged a 2-percent rally at the start of the year on growing optimism about the health of the global economy, stock markets appeared to be pausing for confirmation of a brighter global growth outlook.

Australian's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.3 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index advanced 0.4 percent and South Korea's KOSPI gained 0.2 percent, reversing earlier losses.

"The KOSPI will continue to be rangebound before U.S. housing data and China's GDP data are released later this week," said Kim Joo-yong, an analyst at Bookook Securities.

Analysts at HSBC believe global developments this week will support demand for riskier assets, with U.S. and Chinese data likely to show further momentum in the world's two biggest economies.

"In addition, the Fed speaker calendar is dominated by doves in the early part of the week. These should provide reassurance that the Fed is in no rush to turn off the liquidity tap despite these early signs of encouragement on activity," they said in a client note.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is due to speak at the University of Michigan on Monday and investors are eagerly waiting for clues on how long the Fed's latest bond purchase program will last.

Any signs that the Fed is in no hurry to end its quantitative easing program could see the U.S. dollar soften further against higher-yielding currencies such as the Australian dollar and those of faster-growing emerging economies.

The Aussie dollar rose 0.1 percent to $1.0549, within easy reach of a four-month high of $1.0599 set last week.

The euro was up 0.4 percent at a fresh nine-month high of $1.3404, continuing to outperform the greenback after European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi last week gave no indication the bank would ease monetary policy any further.

Commodity prices found some traction after last week's decline. U.S. crude rose 60 cents to $94.16 a barrel, recovering from Friday's 26-cent fall, while Brent crude gained 32 cents to $110.96 a barrel.

Copper edged up 0.4 percent to $8,075 a metric ton and gold was a shade firmer at $1,665 an ounce.

and i didnt got any. It's not in my intentions to troll, i respect the forum.

I DO update drivers in various laptops/desktops years now.

I know WHAT it needs to be done to solve a driver issue,
I dont know WHY it needs to be done that way though, hence i'm asking.

Darn Windows have a Window Update function, that is not only for security patching BUT for driver updates too.

Windows by install CANNOT identify every piece of hardware that exist on planet earth, hence the generic driver solution, BUT generic driver != optimized driver, hence Windows Update is to find a more appropriate_specific_oriented driver for some of the hardware parts, BUT even Windows8 FAIL to do so.

Conlusion:

a) Some devices are being declared from Windows 8 as "unknown" (they can't even identify the device itself now? let alone the driver.....)
b) Some devices which are declared by Windows 8 as "known", do NOT have a required driver at all (even generic?)
c) Some devices are being declared by Windows 8 Device Management as "known" and "driver installed" (unfortunately generic though, not optimized, hence by BroadCom's wi-fi issue)

Logic dictates that:
Windows 8 CANNOT identify/update properly.
We do NOT know for sure WHAT it needs to be upated and WHAT doesn't.

Shareholders will be allowed to vote on whether they approve the pay packages for Whitman and for other top executives when the company holds its annual meeting March 20 in Mountain View, Calif. This week I have chosen an old app but one of the very best. In my quest to catalogue my huge movie and TV show collection I have been looking for an app that can do just that. All I want is a list of my movies with write ups about the plot and a link to a trailer. There are a few good apps out there but they all seem to fail somewhere for me.

Another interesting aspect in my search was that the standard place where all of these apps pull their meta data from was IMDb, so I thought why not go to the source and see if that can do what I want and sure enough it can. I created a personal list after creating an IMDb account and started the huge job of adding my movies to that list.

I am now about halfway through cataloguing my collection but it is perfect now. The information that IMDb provides is awesome, I can scroll through my collection on my iPhone, iPad or online and it?s all in sync and I can see who is in the film and so much more. The trailer for the movie is just a click away and it makes choosing a movie to watch a perfect experience now.

I know IMDb has been chosen before but it deserves another mention now, if you love movies you will love the IMDb apps.

It?s not the prettiest app, but content from all sources is well laid-out, and it?s hard to beat access to content from all of those sources. Noble Nutlings - Leanna Lofte

Noble Nutlings is a new, fun little game by the ex-Rovio/Angry Birds team where you build your dream car and drive it through each level while collecting nuts, doing tricks, and boosting into big jumps. To control you cart while it's in the air, you tilt your device, or you can use buttons (something I recommend if you're using an iPad). Syncing between devices isn't ideal, but you can do so if you connect to Facebook. Connecting to Facebook will also allow you to play with your friends and compare scores.

Dragon Dictate 3 for Mac

  Easy setup. Improves the more you use it. Very good dialogues for training software. Handles dictation, voice commands, and the recording of audio files.

  Dragon Dictate 3 for Mac is, as the name might suggest, a choice tool for dictation. While it does offer voice control too, that's not its primary selling point, and on the Mac the built-in tools work just fine.

Dictation programs, which let you control your computer and type using only your voice, aren't for everyone. But those who use them for productivity, or to write dialogue more naturally, or for accessibility reasons, will likely turn to Nuance Communication's Dragon brand of software, the leader in this category. In sampling speech-recognition and voice-command software, I've had overwhelmingly positive experiences with Dragon products, and the same can be said for Dragon Dictate for Mac 3.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 Premium for Windows (4.5 stars) impressed me like none other, enough to be named an Editors' Choice. I've also been extremely pleased with the smartphone apps Dragon Go! for search and other Web functions, as well Dragon Dictation for iPhone for transcribing when I am not in the mood to deal with Siri. Having set high expectations for Dragon Dictate for Mac 3, I can't say after testing that it hits quite the same marks as the Windows' version of the product, although it is still very good at what it does and is worthy of our Editors' Choice. Version 3 shows improvement in speed and flexibility , but it's still a very different product from the Windows version, Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The two are as different as their names. Dragon for Mac is a little more rigid than the highly flexible and intuitive NaturallySpeaking Premium, even though their price tags are the same. I was also surprised to find the Mac app's interface looks radically different than that of its Windows counterpart.

In core functionality, however, the two programs are similar. With both Dragon Dictate for Mac and NaturallySpeaking, you can control many applications and functions on your computer using just your voice, as well as dictate speech-to-text in word processing, note-taking, and email applications. You can also dictate to Dragon's own note pad app, which comes with the software, although I found Dragon responded much more quickly and with less lag when used in Mac's own TextEdit program. Speak it, and it shall be written.

Setup and Training
I installed Dragon Dictate 3 for Mac on an iMac running Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (more on the system requirements below). The installation took a minute or two, and the additional setup, which involves acclimating Dragon to your voice and accent, took less than ten minutes.

Setting up is by far my favorite part of the program, as the app does a fantastic job of explaining how the software works on the most general level while also walking you through some demos of operations. For example, as shown in the slideshow, the app might ask you to read the following text aloud: "Pause briefly before saying a command and Dragon will instantly recognize that the command is something you want it to do COMMA rather than something you are dictation PERIOD." While you're being told to say this or that and see the results on screen, the software is in turn learning more about how you speak, such as your accent and other characteristics of your voice.

One small difference that made setting up Dragon Dictate for Mac better than setting up NaturallySpeaking for PC is in the script you have to read to help Dragon learn to understand you. In the PC version, you can choose to read a political speech, a few paragraphs about computers by humorist Dave Barry, or a few other options. In the Mac app, you don't have a choice, but the dialogue provided is an overview of how speech-recognition software works, so you're effectively learning about the program while giving the software information, too. It's a minor difference, but you'll definitely have a better experience with any voice-control software if you learn how it works at the most basic level.

The S&P 500 was little changed Friday, and gained 5 points in the week to close at 1,472.05. The index is a fraction below its close of 1,472.12 Thursday, its highest level since December 2007.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.21 points to 13,488.43. The Nasdaq composite index rose 3.88 to 3,125.63. For the week, the Dow rose 53 and the Nasdaq rose 24.

Companies have started to report earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012, but no clear pattern has emerged as yet.

Aluminum company Alcoa gave?stocks?a lift after it reported earnings late Tuesday that matched analysts' expectations and said that demand was increasing. Investors were unimpressed by Wells Fargo's record profits Friday, choosing instead to focus on the sustainability of those earnings.

"You've been hearing comments that earnings season is going to show a continued contraction in the rate of growth," said Robert Pavlik of Banyan Partners. "People are conflicted, they are worried, but at the same time they don't want to be missing out on the action in the overall market."

Currently, analysts expect fourth quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to grow at a rate of 3.3 percent, according to the latest data from S&P Capital IQ. That's a better growth rate than the previous quarter, but it's considerably weaker that the 8.4 percent growth rate recorded in the same period last year.

Wells Fargo, the first major bank to report earnings, dropped even after the bank reported a 25 percent increase in fourth-quarter earnings. The bank's?stock?fell 30 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $35.10.

JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, U.S. Bancorp, Citigroup and Bank of America are among banks and financial companies reporting earnings next week. Financial?stocks?were the best performing industry group in the S&P 500 last year, gaining 26 percent. Other companies reporting earnings next week include eBay and Intel.

Boeing fell $1.93, or 2.5 percent, to $75.16 after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it is launching a comprehensive review of the critical systems of Boeing's 787, the aircraft maker's newest and most technologically advanced plane, after a fire and a fuel leak earlier this week.

The?stock?market got a boost Thursday from reports suggesting the outlook for economic growth may be improving both in Europe and China.

Stocks?are up on the year after lawmakers came up with a last-minute deal to prevent the U.S. from going over the "fiscal cliff." That averted the threat of a series of tax hikes and spending cuts Jan. 1 that economists say would almost certainly have pushed the U.S. economy into recession.

Avoiding the "cliff" will likely have boosted consumer confidence, said Chris Kichurchak, vice president at Strategic Wealth Partners. That improving sentiment, combined with a strengthening housing market, should prove favorable to so-called cyclical companies that move in line with the economy.

"There are a lot of people who were holding out on spending," before a budget deal was struck, said Kichurchak.

Investors started the year by jumping into?stocks, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch research. Just over $22 billion was invested in equities in the first full week of this year, the second-highest weekly in-flow on record after the $22.8 billion that was invested in September 2007.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite to the security's price, fell 4 basis points to 1.86 percent.

Other?stocks?making big moves;

? American Express rose 45 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $61.24 after the company said that spending by cardholders jumped 8 percent in the fourth quarter, even after Superstorm Sandy crimped some buying.

? Best Buy jumped $2, or 16.4 percent, to $14.21 after the struggling consumer electronics chain reported holiday sales. The company's U.S. performance was flat and, while this was a hair below the 0.3 percent increase that Best Buy reported in the prior-year period, it was an improvement over the past several quarters.

? Ford rose 17 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $14. The company said demand for new vehicles is accelerating in the U.S. Ford plans to hire 2,200 engineers, computer programmers and other white-collar workers this year. The automaker said Thursday it was raising its dividend.

? Corning fell 19 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $12.45 after Goldman Sachs removed cut its rating on the specialty glass manufacturer to "neutral" from "buy," saying that it expected first quarter sales to decline more than previously expected.

I can count on one hand the number of decent cigar-friendly places in Washington, D.C., making the biggest U.S. tourist city with no tobacco tax one of the worst places to smoke. When I?m in Denver, there are about two dozen decent places to light up a cigar, and only a few are out to gouge you or hassle you. Not so in the nation?s capital, but the District is edging its way back to stogie respectability inch by inch.

Credit John Anderson and Matt Krimm, the entrepreneurs at the helm of the legendary?W.?Curtis Draper?Tobacconist locations in D.C. and Bethesda, Md. When they rolled out the red carpet for the media Tuesday night at their newest property in Washington, I was?champing at the bit.

It?s called ?Civil,? and boy, is it ever.

Picture a cigar-lounge-meets-upscale-bar-meets-social-club with 93 seats and valet parking, and then put it in a shopping galleria next door to a high-end restaurant that serves a reduced menu while you smoke.

I?m impressed. The only downside is that for people who work downtown, Civil is a bit of a hike. It?s all the way in the northwest corner of Washington, a block from the Maryland line. Maybe the message is that the further away you get from Capitol Hill, the more civilized everything becomes. (RELATED:?Yes, grown-ups write these laws)

But there?s lots to like there, and lots to emulate for cigar entrepreneurs who crave an upscale clientele.

The prices, for one. Civil shares Draper?s?volume buying power, so the outrageous markup that often accompanies leather seating is not in evidence anywhere. They stock everything from a $5.50 Punch to a $33.00 La Palina. It?s not the grandest selection in the world, but they?ve ?curated? a collection of 125 cigars with something for every taste.

And with no tobacco tax in D.C. ? compared with 15 percent?in Virginia ? the prices were actually less than at my neighborhood shop in the suburbs. If you?ve never lived in Washington, take my word for it: Everything is more expensive downtown, so this was a shock.?(RELATED:?Post-election short smokes)

The retail floor is arranged so that every cigar is visible in glass-encased racks, nestled in cedar trays reminiscent of blackboard chalk trays, row-on-row. One of the proprietors lifted the idea from a tobacconist in Amsterdam. I?ve never seen one like it.

The staff is knowledgeable, including a cigar steward who patrols the lounge offering pairings to go with whatever you might be drinking. (Nice touch.)

That goes for food, too.?Bryan Voltaggio?s RANGE restaurant is adjacent to Civil, and they serve directly in the lounge and at the bar. On the press preview night, reporters noshed on brick oven pizzas, cheese plates, carpaccios and flatbreads. ?The menu utilizes all of RANGE?s nine kitchens,? a news release reads, ?including the rotisserie, wood hearth, pasta station and bakery to bring?guests unique dishes available only at Civil.?

5 convenience stores investigated for illegal gaming activity - FOX16 ...

BENTON, AR ? Five convenience stores in Benton were served search warrants Wednesday in regard to running gaming activity in their stores.

Police say the stores investigated are Lance?s Convenience Store at 3821 Edison Ave, Bullock?s Superstop at 15536 I-30, Phillips 66 at 1554 I-30, Jimmy?s Superstop at 901 Edison Ave, and the EZ GO at 1921 Highway 5 North.

Investigators found that these stores were providing ?prizes? to customers won from playing ?slot style? machines. According to police, the prizes were items such as merchandise from the store and gasoline.

"They are allowed to hand out like little trinkets and such that are basically almost worthless to people, but in this case, it went much beyond that," says Lt. Kevin Russell with the Benton Police Department.

The owners were cited for keeping a gaming device and the machines, 13 of them, were confiscated. Keeping a gaming device is an unclassified misdemeanor.

"Just like anyone else, they'll have their day that they'll be able to go to court and deal with the issue and dispute it or whatever they choose to do," says Russell.

Officers with the Special Investigative Unit closed each store for 30 to 45 minutes Wednesday to take the machines and load them into a truck.

It is now up to a judge to decide whether to give the machines back to the store owners.

Anyone with information about incidents is asked to call the police at 778-1171 or 315-TIPS. The investigation is ongoing and more businesses may be cited in the future.

3-D ear scanning enables custom headphones

U.S. Navy?Seals, hearing aid users and audiophiles all need custom-fit earpieces to get the best sound and perhaps shield their ears from outside noise. New 3-D ear scanning technology aims to replace the messy and imperfect "ear impression" method that is usually required for making customized earpieces starting from this year.

The 3-D ear scanning starts by using a handheld probe to fill a person's ear canal with a fluid-filled membrane that fits snugly. That allows the scanner to beam fluorescent light throughout the liquid to create a 3-D map of the ear canal? a digital image that can guide earpiece makers to make the best-fitting devices possible.

"Our belief is that the membrane ? because it conforms very tightly to your canal all the way down to the tympanic membrane and all the way out to the concha ? gives great opportunity to measure the ear in great detail," said Jeffrey Leathe, chairman and CEO of Lantos Technologies.

The current method of ear impressions fills each ear with a pasty silicone material to create a real 3D model. But the process remains uncomfortable and requires people to sit still for five minutes per ear, so that the 3-D models can be shipped off to earpiece manufacturers. Ear impressions also remain surprisingly error-prone considering the cost of buying custom-fit earpieces for luxury headphones, Leathe said. And past efforts to make 3-D scanners that rely on light and cameras proved less accurate than the ear impression method.

By comparison, the Lantos ear scanning method takes just one minute per ear and only creates a discomfort similar to experiencing mild changes in air pressure. To prove the point, the Cambridge-based Lantos gave a live demonstration at CES 2013 in Las Vegas?on Jan. 7.

Lantos patented the 3-D scanning technology developed by MIT based on the idea of targeting the $5.7 billion U.S. market for hearing aids. But the startup has also begun setting its sights on the $6 billion worldwide market for consumer headphones, where customers already pay hundreds of dollars for the best custom-fit headphones.

The U.S. military has also shown huge interest in the Lantos Technologies solution for custom-fit earpieces, said Darshana Zaveri, a partner at Catalyst Health Ventures and an investor in Lantos Technologies. Military members ranging from F-22 fighter pilots to Special Forces operators on the ground wear earpieces for both hearing protection and for in-ear communication headsets.

Lantos Technologies is still waiting on approval for its device from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But the company seemed confident enough to predict the ear-scanning technology could hit the market sometime in the second quarter of 2013.
